Square one
Your website's success will greatly depend on the preparation that you put into it. It is important to note that I do not specialize in every possible topic for a website. Therefore, the message within your website must be engendered by you. In some cases this may result in hiring seasoned writers for your specific topics. You should be careful to not copy any existing published writings.
Here are a couple things I will have you do to get started:
- Browse the web a bit and send me a minimum of three links to sites that catch your interest. Though I do not copy any published work, it gives me an idea of your tastes and color selections. (If you do not know where to start, you can take a look at many nice looking websites at www.thebestdesigns.com).
- If you wish, you can select a color theme that fits your style or I can offer some suggestions. It is important to stay with the current trend of website colors to give your site a modern feel. You can get some sample ideas at kuler.adobe.com.
- Make a list of pages you feel your website will need. Try not to overlap information such as having a page for "about" and also a similar page for "bio".
- Using one piece of paper to represent each page of your website, begin listing ideas for text or photos you will have included on that page. Also make a personal note as to how each article of information will be substantiated.(e.g. Hiring a professional photographer, etc.)
What is your goal?
Websites are typically started for one of three basic reasons:
- To generate income through ad sales.
- To generate income through the sale of products.
- To provide information about a service or message.
Of course there are many reasons people start a new website, even if it is just to show off pictures of their pet! The expectations of your new website will help me develop a design and growth plan to fit your need. Keep in mind, generating thousands of dollars a month from ad sales on your website is not quite as easy as late night television makes it sound. You must FIRST provide a website that people want to visit, not just hundreds of people, but rather thousands...every single day!
Remember the big two
I can't even express here the importance of letting your visitors know exactly WHO you are and WHAT your message is. This is, perhaps, one of the easiest things to overlook when designing a website. It is a well-researched fact that an internet user's patience is measured in seconds. Give them a reason right away as to why they should remain on your site.
